Compass-Zella Day

“Compass”
We can build a tree house in the pine trees
We can keep our secrets buried underneath
Wild flowers crash between your fingers
Clinging to the wild things that raised usCompass points you home,
Calling out from the east
Compass points you anywhere
Closer to me
If we make it out alive from the depths of the sea
Compass points you anywhere
Closer to me
Where you are, I will be
Miles high, in the deep
Where you are, I will be
Anywhere, in betweenTake me to the garden of your ecstasy
Make myself a headband from your fallen leaves
Woven in the fabric of your tapestry
Cover me in honeysuckle memories

Compass points you home,
Calling out from the east
Compass points you anywhere
Closer to me
If we make it out alive from the depths of the sea
Compass points you anywhere
Closer to me
Where you are, I will be
Miles high, in the deep
Where you are, I will be
Anywhere, in between

I will take the pieces, put them back together
Even when the grass isn’t green enough
Taking all the branches, build ourselves a mansion
Love you in the way that you needed love

Where you are, I will be
Where you are, I will be
Miles high, in the deep
Where you are, I will be
Anywhere, in between

I like this song because I can listen to it while doing homework, and if I want to, I can also sing it. I love Zella Day’s voice.
Four techniques that the writer of this song, Zella Day herself, uses are personal pronouns, direct addresses to the listener, listing, and metaphors.
Where you are, I will be– Zella Day uses direct addresses to the listener to bring us into the song and into her world.
Miles high, in the deep– While this could be thought of as Miles high in the deep, a contradicting statement, Zella Day is listing, (even though there are only two things on the list.)
I think this song is about staying with someone and you being their home, and vice versa. “Compass points you home…compass points you anywhere closer to me.” Zella Day is saying she hopes that this person will come close to her. She really hopes and wants to be with this person.
This definitely isn’t one of the more meaningful songs I listen to, so there wasn’t as much lyrical analysis, but it’s one of my favorites.
Note: I might write another post just because this one wasn’t very interesting.
