Sherman Alexie’s father was a member of the Ceour d’Alene tribe. His mother, had a very different ancestry, descendant of the Colville, Choctaw, Spokane, and European American peoples. Alexie was born with more cerebral fluid in his brain than he should have had and needed to get brain surgery when he was only six months old. He wasn’t expected to survive, but he did. Alexie’s father was an alcoholic, making it hard for his mother to support him as he grew up. Alexie was constantly made fun of at his school because his head was larger, from the brain surgery.
“There are all types of addicts, I guess. We all have pain. And we look for ways to make the pain go away.” -Sherman Alexie The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
